Change Your Look (And Your Mood) with These Trending Hairstyles This Quarter

Having a bad day? Changing your haircut can do wonders for your mood! There’s psychology to back it up: In an interview with Lifehacker, Manhattan-based psychologist and career coach Dr. Lauren Appio said that it has something to do with stress relief and taking control. Often times, she added, the chop happens when people are “bored or feel stuck.”

Appio explained that the “significant change in appearance” gives one a sort of dopamine boost as the “results are immediate and soothing.” It also makes one feel empowered that they are in charge of their lives (and quite possibly, steer it in the right direction).

Ready to head over to the styling salon? Here’s some inspo on what to get:

The short bob

The short bob is having its moment, isn’t it? The short bob hairstyle started appearing a lot online last year, as worn by YouTube trendsetters Tanya Burr and Estee Lalonde. Who knew that the short ‘do will explode? If you’re not familiar with the bob, it is a straight haircut that is just above the shoulders, or even below the ears. The back up to the front is of the same length, although some variations of the bob include one where the front is a bit longer.

The French crop

The French crop of the ’80s has always been here. In fact, it has always been popular among Japanese and Korean women in ads and editorials. However, it’s making a comeback in a big way as it gains even more popularity worldwide. If you have no idea what the French crop looks like, Google the K-Drama show, Strong Girl Bong-Soon — the leading lady wears the hairstyle. It’s basically an upgraded bob that’s usually not tucked behind the ears.

Messy hair, don’t care

Messy hair look

It seems that French hairstyles are indeed “in” this year. This haircut is nothing earth-shattering; however, it sets itself apart by exuding that effortless, Parisian chic vibe. Think wavy, unkempt hair that seemed like it wasn’t washed for days. If your hair isn’t naturally wavy, an easy way to curl it is to put it in a bun while it’s wet then blow-dry and let loose. You may also use a bit of setting lotion and curl it using rollers or hot curling iron. One thing to note is that it doesn’t have to look so perfect at all, so don’t put too much time into it. Scrunch your hair, and you’re done.

If you are feeling bold and adventurous and possess the skills to cut your own hair, you can absolutely do so. There are many tutorials that are available online, especially on YouTube on how to apply your makeup, not to mention, cut your own hair. As a finishing touch, make use of professional hair cutting shears to smoothen and thin out your edges. You can purchase them easily from your local drugstore or specialty hair care stores.

If you’re in desperate need of a change in your life, maybe you don’t have to do something drastic at all. Consider getting a haircut like most people. You’ll love your new look, and it will give you the confidence you need to take on a new day.
