In the Time of Coronavirus: 3 Ways to Defend Yourself from Diseases

The recent outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-2019) has left the world in chaos. Everyone scrambles to get their hands on face masks, surgical spirit, hand sanitisers and toilet paper rolls. People endure long queues at groceries to stock up on food and other essential home items. Governments place cities and even entire countries on lockdown just to help contain the disease.

Yes, these are frightening times, but there’s no need to panic. What you can do instead is to prepare yourself and your family as best as you can to ward off not only the COVID-19 but also other diseases.

Protect yourself

With extra measures in place, you can protect yourself and everyone in your family, especially young children and the elderly against diseases. For one, there are inoculations or vaccinations to prevent certain diseases. Children, of course, need vaccines, but adults would also benefit greatly from immunisation shots, such as flu and shingles vaccines. Another form of protection is pest control. You need to make sure your house is free from pests that transmit diseases. Rats, for example, carry the bacteria that cause leptospirosis. Keeping your house clean, however, is sometimes not enough to get rid of home pests, so you may need to seek help from specialists like those in London for services such as pest fumigation and sterilisation.

Practise good hygiene

Keep yourself and your surroundings clean as much as you can. For starters, you should wash your hands frequently with soap and clean water to physically remove germs, bacteria and viruses from your hands. You should regularly brush your teeth and take a shower/bath. Apart from keeping yourself clean, you should also make an effort to keep your surroundings hygienic. Beyond keeping your home spick and span, make sure you’re not spreading germs, bacteria and viruses yourself. When coughing or sneezing, use a handkerchief, tissue or the inside of your elbow to cover your mouth and nose. If you’re sick, wear a face mask, or better yet, just stay at home

Keep yourself healthy

A healthy lifestyle is probably still the best tool to defend yourself against diseases. After all, staying healthy means having a strong immune system. For sure, you already know you should always get enough sleep and rest. The importance of eating a well-balanced diet cannot be overstated as well. And this goes hand in hand with consuming the right amount of fluids — about 3.7 litres (15.5 cups) for men and 2.7 litres (11.5 cups) for women — from water, healthy beverages and food like fruits every day. Lastly, finding time to exercise regularly to help keep your body fit and healthy is also a must.

Prevention is the Best Form of Treatment

With illnesses like the coronavirus disease 2019 threatening many people’s lives, now more than ever is the time to defend yourself and your family against diseases. You can do this by protecting yourself from any health risks, practising good hygiene and staying healthy. Remember that prevention is still the best form of treatment.
